I think long range, many of California's problems can be diminished by proper urban planning on every level.
Everything is too spread out. It is not reasonable to live in California without a car. I lived in Nice France for 9 years happily without a car. Also I would like to see more lanes for bikers. Right now we treat bike paths as entertainment. They have joggers, baby strollers, and roller skaters in them. We need to make it possible for people to take their bicycles when they want. San Diego in particular has quite wide roads. Get rid of street parking, put a small lip between traffic and the bike path and 3 foot tall rubber poles on the lip and you have a wonderful separation from traffic and bicycles. There is lots that can be done.

Also the new high rises in San Diego have huge windows facing south and no openings at the top of the windows and no overhang or awnings to shade the units. Get the architects involved with simple solutions.

What I find is that the blind spot on our current national fleet of 300 million vehicles, crosses through the full political spectrum. California continually falls on its ideological sword for ideas like the one most recently in play, which is this notion that CA can buy "clean power." Meanwhile, all this means is that coal-fired power gets arbed away to some other state (maybe right next door) and the automobile complex carries onward. Oh, and CA has all sorts of nit-picky problems even building Solar.

Thanks for the idea. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? That the emissions from Alberta's oil sands are probably dwarfed by CA vehicular emissions?

G

Gregor, would love to see you draw an emmission parallel between Cali's auto pollutants vs. the the pollutants spewed from Alberta's dirty oil sands. Perhaps it would create opportunity for reflection.
